چکیده

The Subadult Virtual Anthropology Database (SVAD) is the largest available repository of contemporary (2010–2019) subadult reference data from around world. It composed collected individuals aged between birth and 22 years. Data were skeletal remains (n = 43, Colombia) medical images 4848) generated at examiner’s offices in United States (full-body Computed Tomography (CT) scans), hospitals France, Netherlands, Taiwan (region-specific CT South Africa Lodox Statscans), a private clinic Angola conventional radiographs), dental practice Brazil (panoramic radiographs). Available derivatives include individual demographics (age, sex) with standardized and/or growth development indicators for all samples, segmented long bone innominate surfaces scan samples. Standardized protocols collection are provided download freely accessible researchers students.

Estimating body mass in subadult human skeletons.

Methods for estimating body mass from the human skeleton are often required for research in biological or forensic anthropology. There are currently only two methods for estimating body mass in subadults: the width of the distal femur metaphysis is useful for individuals 1-12 years of age and the femoral head is useful for older subadults. This article provides age-structured formulas for estim...

Sexual dimorphism in the subadult mandible: quantification using geometric morphometrics.

There have been numerous attempts, with varying degrees of success, to differentiate males from females on the basis of the immature skeleton. We investigate here whether the mandible can discriminate immature individuals by sex; the techniques we apply are from the field of geometric morphometrics. The application of these methods in forensic anthropology is still relatively new; thus, an impo...

The Olduvai Hominid 8 foot: adult or subadult?

Olduvai Hominid 8 (OH 8), an articulating set of fossil hominin tarsal and metatarsal bones, is critical to interpretations of the evolution of hominin pedal morphology and bipedal locomotion. It has been suggested that OH 8 may represent the foot of a subadult and may be associated with the OH 7 mandible, the type specimen of Homo habilis. This assertion is based on the presence of what may be...

Gestural communication in subadult bonobos (Pan paniscus): repertoire and use.

This article aims to provide an inventory of the communicative gestures used by bonobos (Pan paniscus), based on observations of subadult bonobos and descriptions of gestural signals and similar behaviors in wild and captive bonobo groups. In addition, we focus on the underlying processes of social cognition, including learning mechanisms and flexibility of gesture use (such as adjustment to th...

Evaluating developmental shape changes in Homo antecessor subadult facial morphology.

The fossil ATD6-69 from Atapuerca, Spain, dated to ca. 900 ka (thousands of years ago) has been suggested to mark the earliest appearance of modern human facial features. However, this specimen is a subadult and the interpretation of its morphology remains controversial, because it is unclear how developmental shape changes would affect the features that link ATD6-69 to modern humans. Here we a...
